After a two year hiatus to get my MBA, American Dad is back and ready for the 2012 election. It has been a long time and I am happy to get back to writing my blog. This election year is one of the most important in recent memory because another four years of failed government intervention in the economy and our personal lives will hurt the United States of America.

Conservatism is about individual freedom and the ability become more than the circumstances around you. Not everyone chooses to make themselves better, some like being dependent and playing the victim card. But that is there choice, it is not and should not be the governments job to make those that make themselves better feel ashamed and force them to pay for those that choose not to better themselves.

Government should help those that cannot help themselves, but they should not help those that only want a free ride. The current leaders in government think that the only way people get wealthy is by suppressing others or stealing from them. There are businesses and other people that do hurt people to make a profit, but that is not all businesses or people.

As Ronald Reagan once said, “Government is not the solution to our problems, government is the problem.” President Reagan also understood that a large centralized government will lead to a loss of liberty. Here is another quote from the President, “Concentrated power has always been the enemy of liberty.” For our country to prosper in the future, the government needs to stop trying to control the lives of its citizens and our economy.

The United States of America is a Republic where government is limited by the constraints placed upon it by the Constitution. The Constitution is designed to save us from a government that wants to control our daily lives. Government can be controlled if we control the term limits of those in Congress so they do not become career politicians. We as Americans have the power if we will only use it!

I wanted to share this great article that I could not possibly improve upon. It is by David Hogberg at Investors.com and here is part of what it has to say:

Of course, the bill is supposed to provide us with security. But it will result in skyrocketing insurance costs and physicians leaving the field in droves, making it harder to afford and find medical care. We may be about to live Benjamin Franklin’s adage, “People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both.”

The sections described below are taken from HR 3590 as agreed to by the Senate and from the reconciliation bill as displayed by the Rules Committee.

1. You are young and don’t want health insurance? You are starting up a small business and need to minimize expenses, and one way to do that is to forego health insurance? Tough. You have to pay $750 annually for the “privilege.” (Section 1501)

2. You are young and healthy and want to pay for insurance that reflects that status? Tough. You’ll have to pay for premiums that cover not only you, but also the guy who smokes three packs a day, drink a gallon of whiskey and eats chicken fat off the floor. That’s because insurance companies will no longer be able to underwrite on the basis of a person’s health status. (Section 2701).

I wrote last week about the potential trap the Republicans were walking into regarding the Healthcare Summit. The primary question I asked was if they would spring the trap or walk right into it. Well they seem to perform as best as they could given they were given just a little less than 2 hours of talking time with the Democrats and PBO talked for over 4 hours.

It is clear when you listen to people like Rep. Paul Ryan talk about the differences and that the solutions that the Liberals propose to solve the rising cost and fewer options will do the opposite. Here is Rep. Ryan talking about the difference in approach. And the next clip from Rep. Ryan tells that hiding the numbers or leaving them out does not make them go away.

The following email I received from Organizing for America’s Director Mitch Stewart on Friday just shows that the lefties live in bizzaro world where up is down and left is right and hello is good-bye. Here is what the email said:

President Obama gathered with congressional leaders of both parties yesterday for an open, honest, and productive discussion on health reform. It was a strong success, focused on substance — as CNN put it, “a win for our country.”

While disagreements remain, the meeting uncovered considerable areas of overlap, including many Republican ideas that were already in the President’s proposal. And with all the best ideas now on the table, the President made it clear that no excuses remain: Congress must put aside partisan divides and swiftly complete a final bill.

This is a message the whole country needs to hear, but most people weren’t able to watch all seven hours of today’s summit — and we can’t let the special interest spin machine drown us out. That’s where you come in.

What areas overlap and what proposals from the Republicans are in the President’s plan? Is it tort reform or ability to buy an insurance policy across state lines or having the ability to carry your insurance policy with you? I have yet to see any of that in any proposal that has been offered for the past year including the Presidents recent proposal of his own.

The exchange between Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) is another example of the left living in bizzaro world. Alexander during the opening statement says that the CBO shows there will be an increase in premiums for millions of Americans with the proposals that have been passed by the House and the Senate bill and then talks about the reconcilliation that has been discussed by the Democrats as an option to cram their government control of the healthcare industry. To which Reid calls Alexander a liar here. However, just a few days before the summit Sen. Reid said this in an interview.

Nancy Pelosi talking about Jobs?

And now on to Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and her claim that the healthcare bill is not a healthcare bill, it is a jobs bill that will create 4 million jobs over its lifetime and 400,000 immediately! Are you serious? She must be talking about creating 4 million government jobs and not private sector jobs. Here is her whopper at the healthcare summit that she also repeated this past Sunday.

This is a message the whole country needs to hear, but most people weren’t able to watch all seven hours of today’s summit — and we can’t let the special interest spin machine drown us out. That’s where you come in.

I did not know that a majority of the American people were part of the Special Interest Spin Machine as claimed by Mr. Stewart. Where is our money for working for them? It is a fundamental lack of understanding on the part of the left in Washington that the American people don’t want them controling their lives and limiting their choices.

Now the Democrats and the President are no longer calling it reconilliation, they are calling it “simple majority” as if that alone will make the American people be alright with it. The depths they will go to is disgusting.

We HAVE to keep telling them the American people want these plans to not be implemented because now the American people know the Republicans are more than just the party of no. I have a lot of disagreements with the GOP over the past few years, but I align with them more than the Democrats by far.

God Bless,

American Dad

Well the obvious answer to that question is, YES! Of course they are walking into a trap, the question is can they spring the trap on Obama and the Democrats to make them look even worse. Or, will the trap get sprung on them and they lose all credibility with the American people that have come out against any form of Obamacare.

The White House yesterday released their latest incarnation of Obamacare that takes most of its pieces from the Senate bill while sprinkling in some of the House version and topping it off with additional government control. At The Plum Line blog, Greg Sargent writes about WH communications director Dan Pfeiffer making it very clear that if the GOP makes an effort to block this latest attempt at government takeover of 1/5th of the economy they will move to reconciliation.

The MSM is already trying to paint the GOP into a corner with this “Summit” on Thursday by giving a postive spin on the proposal. Thanks to Brent Baker at Newsbusters for the information below:

The cost of this proposal from Obama is nearly $1,000,000,000,000. It is paid for by cutting Medicare by $500,000,000,000 and by raising taxes by $500,000,000,000. He proposes to create another Federal Agency that will put price controls on the insurance companies. Ask Jimmy Carter how government price controls worked for them in the 1970′s.
If Obama was serious about working with the GOP on a bipartisan healthcare plan, he would scrap what is pending in the Conference Committee and would not have proposed this take it or leave it plan he released Monday. The GOP cannot go into the meeting and allow Obama to set the pace and direct the conversation.
This is a time for Mr. Obama to listen since he claims that Republicans have not had an idea on a plan even though it has been posted on their website since July 2009. As long as the Republicans stay focused and follow the direction of the American people, they will come out of this looking good.
From the Liberals perspective, this is all about making the Republicans the problem instead of their own party. They think that the American people don’t understand what is going on and if they can “prove” the Republicans are the party of no, they will regain the momentum going into the November elections.
Obama’s group, Organizing for America, claims that only big insurance companies and drug companies are opposed to their plan of government takeover. Since February 11th, they have been trying to get people to committ to volunteering for the Democrat incumbents if they pass their healthcare plan. Nevermind that every credible poll shows a majority of American’s do not like the plans that Obama, Reid and Pelosi have offered. Nevermind that 85% of American’s like their current coverage.
It’s like the famous line in The Wizard of Oz – “Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!”
Any plan that does not address tort reform, portability of insurance and the ability to buy insurance across state lines will only lead to higher taxes, higher insurance premiums and less services available. A reform of the pre-existing condition clauses would also be a good idea, not the removal of these conditions. Just like executive pay, the government should not be in the business of regulating how much a private insurance company should charge for its services.
If the GOP does not bring these things to the table on Thursday, they will lose all of the momentum they have gained over the past year. So GOP, are you going to spring the trap or are you going to walk right into it?
God Bless,
American Dad

Well what have we learned over the past week and a half?

  1. A Republican can win in Massachusetts.
  2. Democrats in Congress and the White House are still negotiating Obamacare in backrooms.
  3. Scott Brown won because the people support Obamacare. (See the following link for discussion b/w Howard Dean and Chris Matthews)
  4. The stimulus package passed in February 2009 has saved thousands and thousands, no 800,000, no 1.5 million, no thats not right 2 million jobs. I guess it is hard to keep up with that one.
  5. The leadership of the Democrats feel that this means they need to double down on their policies.

Well the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expect a different result. I guess we can say that the Obama Administration and Democrats in Congress are insane because according to Obama in his State of the Union address last night he is going to push forward with Obamacare, Cap and Trade and taxing everything in sight.

As a Conservative, I want them to continue down this path that will only lead to their demise in November. It was reported earlier this week that when House Democrat Marion Berry was talking with the Whitehouse about concerns of a repeat of 1994 that Obama said “This is not 1994 and I am me.”

And last night with his SOTU address he tried to rekindle the campaign fire that swept him into office in 2008 by saying a lot of things that are vague and populist and trying to pit one group of people against another. The difference is that people know what type of politician he is now and what his policies of the past year say about him. Did anyone notice that when he was talking about the American people’s values and belief in hard work, he did not state that those were his beliefs too?

Half-truths and blatant falsehoods were the mode last night and the unprecedented break from tradition by calling out the Supreme Court during the SOTU while earlier decrying politics and asking for Republicans and Democrats to pass legislation to bypass their ruling. Obama made it clear last night that he will press forward with the policies that have hurt America and our children’s future since he was sworn in last year.

Today it has been reported that Nancy Pelosi has been able to get the other Democrats in the house to support the Senate version if they “fix” it with $300 million added. This will allow the process of budget reconciliation to pass Obamacare with only 51 votes in the Senate and bypass a filibuster.

So 2010 is going to be a repeat of 2009 from Reid, Pelosi and Obama. They fit the description of insanity and will reap what they have sown in November. Let’s hope they keep their head in the sand for the rest of the year. Keep talking to your friends about what is really going on and we will show them the AMERICAN PEOPLE still have the power in this country!
